This is a fretted clavichord based on one made in 1784 by Christian Gottlob Hubert, which is in the Russell collection in Edinburgh. Hubert was an organ and clavichord maker who worked in Bayreuth and Ansbach. He made both fretted and unfretted instruments and they are all exceptionally well designed and made. The case and stand are made of walnut. The lid has veneered burr walnut panels, and the stand has turned and fluted legs. There is a simple shelf to serve as a music desk at the back of the case. It is 132cm long. The pitch is A 440 and the tangents are set to Valotti's temperament although alternatives are possible. It is diatonically fretted with the Ds and As free. The keyboard has ebony naturals and pear wood sharps. The compass of C to f’’’ makes it a useful instrument for most 18th century repertoire, and it is very satisfying to play with a sweet and singing sound.
