This clavichord is closely based on a late eighteenth century instrument by Johan Jacob Bodechtel of Nuremburg which used to be in Christopher Hogwood’s collection. It is double fretted with the D’s and A’s free, and has a compass of C to f’’’, making it a useful and versatile instrument. The naturals are ebony and the accidentals bone-topped pear. It has a comparatively large and singing sound and is characterful and satisfying to play. The tangents are tuned to Valotti’s temperament and the pitch is A 415. The case is made of pine, painted outside, and is 134 cm long. I have also made a version with block-printed papers inside, and with a separate hinged flap over the keyboard. It has a stand with turned legs.
